We invite you to spend a week on the serene grounds of PriestField Pastoral Center “relieving” your spirit through carved relief woodworking. Vonn Hartung will guide both beginner and experienced students through the process of their own carved relief project, removing the extraneous to reveal the beauty within.

The carving will be in relief—a flat surface with an image raised in relief.  The project will be approximately 8” wide by 10” high on 1” to 2” thick Basswood.

Participants will have the option of carving their own design, an icon image, or a class project designed by the artist. He will offer a choice of two designs, one being a human image and the other a Christian symbol or object.

Students will he taught in a clear manner the proper use of woodcarving tools, the precise way to begin a carving and the progression steps to completion. Prior to carving, they will create a clay make-up of their chosen design.

All materials are provided except the carving tools, which must be supplied by the student. Contact PriestField for a list of the 3 required tools.

Experienced carvers who wish to bring their favorite wood and designs to work with are encouraged to do so and will have assistance as needed.

Beginner and intermediate carvers will have individual assistance.
